Russian Ferret Society
Russian Ferret Society
Dear visitor!
Welcome to a site of the Russian Ferret Society. If you found us then you take an interest in ferrets and ferrets in Russia too, we hope. Our society is young, but we love ferrets and aspire to know about these animals as much as possible.
We always glad to converse about ferrets and to exchange by information and expirience.

Our goals and fundamental position
- increase of competence level of ferret owners in keeping and training of ferrets;
- retrieval and spreading of scientific, veterinarian and practical information about ferrets;
- consultation and helping for ferret owners and breeders;
- retrieval of statistics about ferrets (for this we made and support Ferret Data Base);
- breeding and distribution healthy and tame ferrets.
We are independent and informal society. We haven't a formal membership, but every ferret owner or breeder who devote oneself to ferrets can make a contribution to our mission. Our society don't strive for commercial purpose. We based on the enthusiasm of ferret owners and breeders who crave for knowledge acquisition about these animals, and on the love and understanding of ferrets.

Our history and achievements
Ekaterina Melnik graduated from Moscow State University, Faculty of Soil Science (1998). Ferret breeder from 2001. Keeps five ferrets.
"Ferrets are terrific clever creatures. You can live many years side by side with them and to be sure that you know all about their behaviour and habits, but suddenly they are up to something, that you can't await. Sometimes they really catch napping..."
Dmitry Kalinin graduated from Moscow State University, Biological Faculty (1998). Ferret breeder from 2001. Has five ferrets.
"Above all interesting individuality of these animals. You can't find two ferrets with same characters. It's possible to maintain close non-verbal contact with them, like with a dog, but as distinct from a dog, ferret always know on which side one's bread is buttered!"
Two ferret breeders from Moscow founded Russian Ferret Centre in April 2002. This society meaned for all russian-spoken ferret owners and breeders in all partes of the world, and also for people who intend to keep ferrets.
At that time true information in russian language about ferrets as pets didn't exist. We began to study information from internet, articles, newsletters, books in english. At the same time we studied russian scientific publications about polecats, hybrids between polecats and ferrets, behaviour of these animals, breeding and selection ferrets for fitch farms, etc. Also we gained experience in feeding, traininng and breeding, interchange of experience with russian and european breeders.
After two years we can say that the result of our activity is positive. We created web-site, which contains many useful information about all aspects of ferret keeping and really help to ferret owners. Today many of them know how correctly keep their pets and can give of good advice for beginning owners.
Our ferret breeders, when they sell kids, always thoroughly select clients, tell about negative aspects of keeping, consultate about feeding, training, necessity of castration and vaccination and other. In comparison with 2002, less people buy ferrets in fitch-farms and pet-markets, more look for competent breeders. Ferrets who were breeded from Ferret Centre live now in many parts of Russia, and in some countries of East Europe.
Recently our members builded first in Russia hotel, designed for ferrets, and ferret owners left there their animals when go to a vacation or a business trip.
And in short, we don't go in for:
- organize ferret shows, because it's "not for ferrets, but for people only";
- popularize ferrets, because popularization bring more negatives sides than positives;
- lisp with ferrets, because it's "for people's fun". We try to understand the really necessities of ferret life and to be in use for them.
